Sales have rocketed since the Leicestershire Waste Partnership - made up of the county and district councils - launched a deal in April enabling householders to make massive savings and slim their waste bins.

Thanks to the special offer, residents can buy compost bins made from recycled plastic for as little as £8, plus delivery - this represents a huge 80% reduction on retail prices and units are still available while stocks last. People can also buy a second one for half price.

Composting diverts rubbish from landfill and each unit saves around 150kg of waste each year.

Scrunched up paper, vacuum cleaner contents, egg shells, tea bags and even coffee grounds and filter paper are some of the more surprising offerings which can also be converted into garden nutrients.

Guy Jackson, vice-chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: "We designed the new, money-saving deal to encourage more people to compost waste at home.

"Leicestershire is one of the top county partnerships for recycling and composting but we're always keen to do more and I'm pleased that so many people have bought bins.

"Composting not only cuts the amount of rubbish which needs collection but also provides a boost for gardens."

A 220-litre compost  bin is available for £8 and a 330-litre bin costs £9.50. There is a £5.49 delivery charge per order.

A wide range of composting products and water butts are available. For more information and to order, please visit www.getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444.
